  • The Umbrella at the Edge of the Universe

At the beginning of it all, there might have been nothing, but by the time I opened my eyes there was darkness. Then, very quickly, there were planets. "These are the planets," said the girl with the orange umbrella. They didn't look like planets to me. They looked like ballerinas. A woman pliéd in front of me, intricate braids swishing as she vaulted across the stage floor, skirt glinting when she twirled. www.onedoor.ccThe space shimmered and bent at wild angles."Is this Tchaikovsky?" Darkness, planets, music. Things Are Not What They Seem

How long had it been? Taylor glanced at her watch.  It read 11:43 a.m. just as it had the three times she’d checked it before. Had it stopped? She didn’t know, because all around her it seemed as if everything had stopped. Except her. She was the only thing moving in the office. Stopped, in mid-sip of the latte he drank every day, was her boss Pete Elliott. My eye was drawn to the same place I had been watching for quite some time.  There it was again, that flash of reflective light.  A small glint letting me know what I sought time after time, was indeed there now.I strengthened the Celestron magnification, sharpened the focus in the finder tube, and engaged the special mirror in the telescope’s tube slowly.  This wa...Ammone door

    Chance Acquaintances

Relying heavily on his cypress-wood staff, Manabu dragged his feet along a coastal road. Sunbaked asphalt warmed his soles through the straw sandals. At the rate his motor skills deteriorated, he’d be a limping pile of body parts in no time, much less arrive at the next fishing village. He panted heavily. The taste of brine saturated his mouth. He halted, buttressed himself against the staff, and squinted at the late afternoon sky. He had to admit the light blue firmament had grown on him. The color struck him as odd and exotic at first. But when it came to the aesthetic quality of its sunrise...Ammone door
