Darkness surrounds me like a balmy overcoat in the snow. The drapes on the window of my room are never drawn and only the most persistent sunrays enter during the day. As at night, light from the bulbs and tubes of my neighbours and beyond coalesce terrifyingly and slither in from under the doorway. I haven’t always been perverse to light. I used to play football at the Methodist High School in the city of my birth. Our coach was a nun of the name Ms Hargreaves. Her skin was devoid of any lustre, gnarled, it looked as if it would relinquish its bearer altogether and fall to the ground in a lum...k20one door

    Breaking the Barrier

“Are you coming tonight?”An awkward pause ensues.“It would be fun! Almost all of them will likely show up. We haven’t pulled this off prior, and I bet we can never pull off something like this again! You’ll be missing out a lot!”“Bro… I’d love to but….”“.…but what?”“Let me finish first, geez!”, this is not the first time that he does this to me, as he has this habit of doing this to others too, “But….I….have some….errands….. to take care of. John had spent all his Student Loan before Easter, and to keep body and soul together during his final year he’d been obliged to turn to Loan Sharks with punitive ‘interest charges’. Inevitably he’d missed payment dates – two, now – and the threatening messages on his mobile were becoming more h...k20one door

    The Mask Mandate

Another Thursday had passed. A dreary Thursday filled with drama and gossip and tedious lessons that didn't really educate any of us at all. It was exhausting, having the same repetitive routine, a never-ending cycle that was impossible to break. As I looked around the room, I went from person to person, examining them, trying to think of one decent thing to say about each of them, but my mind went blank. They were the kind of people who thrive off drama and attention, the kind who peaked in high school and although from the outside I seemed no different from my classmates, the comparison coul...k20one door
