    Emmy took a deep breath, then eased open the bedroom door. Luckily, the room’s occupant wasn’t a light sleeper, so she hardly stirred as Emmy entered and closed the door behind her. Emmy had wandered this room enough times during the day to know where the floor creaked and groaned, so it was easy enough to cross the room with hardly a sound.     Nila rested the warm cup of coffee on the windowsill, the aroma of the freshly ground coffee beans sweeping through the house. She always loved these winter afternoons, the sun setting over the frozen lake, the surface glistening as fresh snowfalls from the heavens blanketing another winter's night. “Winter’s cool kiss, warmed by the heat of the planted flame.” She smiled, lifting the cup to her lips for a sip of the hot drink.
