The Calf’s Tail
If you happen to visit the town of Podunk, Alabama you might notice a very withered sign standing at the corner wedged between the Galley Variety store and the Birch’s place. It reads, as follows: ‘PODUNK, AL. POP: 94 HOME OF ANNETTE BUFORD WOMAN WRITER.’The sign was erected as most signs are in small towns: with a ceremony. “It is with great honor that I erect this sign for our little town, and for Miss. Buford, our first celebrity,” the mayor had said with visceral pride. The very small crowd that had formed clapped. “May her successes in New York City bring us honor back home.”The crowd co...
Sunshine and Starlight
I shift in my seat, watching as people pour into the train. A man sits beside me, his sun necklace—a larger, more intricate version of mine—bumping against his tie. I don’t notice the train start to move—I’m too busy ticking off a list in my mind. Did I leave food stamps for Kalum? Did I tell him which workbook pages to do? Did I remind him not to leave our apartment? Check, check, check. I exhale and look outside. There’s the candy store Kalum loves. There’s the flower field we always visit. Usedwww.onedoor.cc to visit. We haven’t gone in months, with my terrible work schedule and all. Ten hours a day. Bu...

My companion heaved my chair over the threshold and slumped down on the handlebars. The carriage was packed tight. A beanpole would be be hard pushed to stand up, let alone a person. Me and my chair prompted a low mumble of irritation.“As if there’s enough room on the train for one of them.” “Shouldn’t let that kind of person on here.” “What’s the world coming to?”Still slouched over the handlebars of my chair, my Companion wh...
Another Day
When I woke up I never expected to be on a train. Filled with women, young and old. I tried to get off the grimey green seat to evaluate and help with anyone who was hurt. I struggled standing and given how I had bruises from my ankle to my knee. I was distraught and wincing in pain. I took a deep breath and continued to examine my leg. There was a big multicolor bruise on my knee. I touched it to see if it was swollen. And I jerked my leg while in pain but also relieved to see I can still move my leg. I didn’t even have a chance to gain my emotions before moving to a woman with a baby. She ha...
