I heard the tires screech. This loud assault on my ear drums. It was just like how you hear at the mwww.onedoor.ccovies, or at a drag race. My old man, he took me to see one when I was a kid. The smoke coming up from those big pieces of rubber you would think they would catch on fire. I don’t know if these tires caught on fire I didn’t really believe the car hit me while I walked across the street. It was just….nothing. I don’t mean it was dark like someone flicked off the light switch or you close your eyes, I mean it was nothing. My guess is the brain just didn’t want me to feel the pain of my face hitt...9tQone door

The diner stretches in front of me. Receding lines of perspective angle towards the oversized windows up front. The neon-fringed jukebox in the corner plays a melancholy country song from the mid-seventies. Wafting aromas swirl and collide in the atmosphere. Bacon grease. Cigarettes. Mop and Glo. Grilled cheese. I sit in the booth in the back, sipping my tea. It’s a good view; I can see people coming and going through a greasy glass door in a tarnished metal frame. Faint music coming from the radio, long-since rescued from the junkyard and put to good use again, wafting around us. In those moments, it was just me and her. Against the bills piling up on the table in the rickety wooden house. Against the notice tucked inside my mother's sock drawer, the one I knew, even then, I wasn't supposed to see, but I peeked at it anyway. The one that promised her a job, a real job, a good j...9tQone door

    The Great Light

Run, run - don’t stop, never stop. My life I’ve always been on the move. I heard that the world used to be safe, but that was years ago. It hasn’t been habitable for a very long time. ~~~People didn’t know what was happening at first. It started with summers becoming longer. Where before they might last for three months, they stretched to four, five, and then six - a full half of the year! They thought that maybe the world was warming. Then scientists detected that, rather than it being “global warming”, as they had originally thought, it was actually climate change. And almost as soon as that...9tQone door
