Prelude to a Catastrophe
All of the chattering in the assembled group ceased as Fiona, the Queen, majestically entered the main chamber of the colony. The name of the colony, Westparkia, was derived from its location in the historical downtown park of the city. She strode proudly on all of her six legs to the podium in front and gracefully waved them to acknowledge the cheers from the crowd. She was in her natural element and milking the situation for all of the adulation that it was worth. Her appearance was unusual, given that most of her time was normally reserved for the laying and tending of eggs in the nursery. H...
Dis-irrellevance
The bells are singing once more upon this city I have created. Hundreds of people walk like voided souls amongst the streets and white doves fill the blue sky with nothing but a feeling of peace. Why but why does it feel like my work is not done yet? Have I forgotten something important? Is my Kin not as established amongst Humankind like I am? The bells…they are still singing my name. It’s been like this since day one. But I looked upon that letter with a feeling of foreboding and dread. My dad wanted me to do everything he did: Go to the same school, join the military, join the same infantry, g...
The Big Book of Family Lies
I was born into a dynasty. A huge, overgrown, chaotic family. I have 37 first cousins. My grandfather and his 2 brothers married the 3 daughters of another family, causing confusion, chaos and volumes of family myths. Much depended on whether you were a descendant of Abraham, Isaac or Jacob. To further complicate matters, Isaac’s wife died in childbirth, not surprising as this was her tenth delivery. So Jacob’s wife stepped in and ended up looking after 17 children. The 3 brothers, all immigrants to this country, built a large and profitable furniture business and money was never a problem. We...
