For the third year in a row, my petition to remove the Santa statue from the storefront had been outvoted. Facing the sidewalk with one hand raised in greeting, the bauble was supposed to be welcoming. But I saw how the children walked by the window, one hand in their parents’, the other reaching out towards the display of holiday cakes. Their eyes would grow wide in wonder and subsequent horror when they noticed the terrifying portrayal of Saint Nick looming over them. His face had been carved into a permanent grimace with the paint chipping off the left side. His raised hand was more akin t...JdNone door

    The Pink Drink

Wind in my throat. It is fresh, it is clean. I sip the dew of a miserable drink, bright pink and fruity. I would kill for a shot of tequila right now. The pink, thick liquid glides down my throat. God, just as tasteless as Mother used to make it. Ha! How attainable those goals had all seemed at that moment, and how simultaneously silly and sad they seem at this one, on the evening of 29 December, annus horribilis finally drawing to its end.One of the goals, at least, has been accomplished – and ironically, it’s the one that I’d thought would be the most difficult. When I was sick back in March, the 40 lbs. dropped off easily. Was it covid? I only wish I knew,...JdNone door
