    Echoes from the past

    I have walked countless times in front of that house, yet today it felt different. The yellow paint that was chipping off the exterior, was replaced by a white coat of paint. The betel vines that espoused the sidewalls now lay on the muddy ground, all curled up. Shrubs and wildflower plants that used to adorn and hide the bottom half of the house were now in piles all over the front yard. A wheelbarrow lay upside down, with other garden tools surrounded.     The address I had been given led me to an old building on Mission Street. On the walls of the entryway I saw the names of the different businesses that occupied the place. The names included a firm called The Introduction and another called This Narrative. I saw the one I was looking for, the one my friend had scribbled down for me: This is It!.According to the directory, This is It! was on the third floor. As I was halfway up the stairs, I walked by what appeared to be an old closet with the door half-open. Lights, colored lights, were coming from somewhere inside.     The room was lightly decorated in shades of white and gray, and small accents of gold and silver. There were sparse furnishings or decor. This place didn’t have a name, other than “the room.” At one point, it was empty. Nothing was in it. When at last it was decorated, which was not for many years, this room somehow decided it would change itself depending on whoever was staying in it. No room it decided to be was the same room twice, unless it was the same person staying in it. The room was the only unique thing about the house that it was in.
