    A strand of hair wriggled itself from under Maxine's beanie. She snapped after it by reflex, only to be pushed back by bone-chilling fear. Of course, her hair wouldn’t fall – it was attached to her head.     First impressions: the menu was worryingly long. As was the young waitress’ uniform, but that could be forgiven. Apparel could be tarnished any number of ways both inside and outside of the kitchen, accidents happen. A five page menu was not an accident. It wasn’t just that it was long either, the big problem was that there was such a wide variety of dishes. From Italian pasta to American-style barbecue to Greek gyros (on a plate!     New York City was still beautiful. I heard rumors the iconic skyline had become nothing more than a few teeth jutting skyward from the bay, but I could see much of it remained. It was still the most beautiful city in the world to me, even in ruin.  I had traveled over a hundred miles to stand here on the shores of New Jersey, nearly all of that journey coasting on the fumes of hope that I would find New York City at the end of it.  I came from the northern forests in St Marys, where I was generally safe and well-supplied.
