    “George.”Jim closed the side door, shutting out the tempest that tried to rip the handle from his hand. He fumbled with the latch, his back to the steamy kitchen, and hoped he could pretend to not hear the single word Laura uttered like an epithet.Courage summoned, Jim wiped his boots and turned to face the woman he loved.                 In the waiting room, I fill out the forms painstakingly, the way I’ve gotten used to doing over the years.  I take them up to the desk, where the secretary asks me for my insurance card.  I pat my pockets, and pull out my wallet.  I flip through the cards, “Damn”, I finally say.  “I must have left it at home.  Can I pay out of pocket or something?”  “Oh, we can sort you out later.”  “Thanks”, I say, relieved, and return to my seat.  But, by the looks of the people in the waiting room, that probably happens a lot.  This isn’t the charming, well-funded medical practices of my youth. ...Tldone door

    “Ask that guy. Ask him,” the man said.The man shook his head.The other nudged him.  He nudged back.I didn't want to be bothered. I don't care what they wanted, but I knew that I was not interested.I was passing through town and got thirsty.  Wanted to find my way back to the interstate.I paid for my drink.  The one that initiated the nudging came forward.  “Pardon me, sir, I wonder if you could help us today?”This seemed to be a serious matter, but why would they ask a total stranger for something like this?He told me that the plague had hit their small rural area hard.  Seems the two gravedig...Tldone door
