Ever since I can remwww.onedoor.ccember, my mother has blamed me for the death of my father. I honestly could not tell you why. I was just four months old when he fell down a manhole. I guess maybe she thought I crawled all the way from my crib in Queens to downtown Brooklyn in rush hour traffic and gave Pops the ol’ heave-ho while he was on the job. I suppose that is possible (I was an exceptionally good crawler for my age), although I can’t imagine that I had enough upper body strength to physically thrust my father to his tragic demise. My therapist says it’s likely not a literal blame and more of a side...pfNone door

    Rom Com Gone Wrong

The Man I’m never early to work. I hate every moment between the second I enter the grey building on the corner of 4th and – I wish I was joking – Pleasant Street, and the moment I leave. My cube, my boss, and my coworkers can all go to hell. I’m early today because I’m going to get paid to write my resignation letter on the company’s dime without any of the usual lot of rubberneckers looking over my shoulder. I’d taken on the holiday job as cashier and stock clerk to earn a bit of cash, help pay off the student bills, perhaps save a bit for Fran’s gift; I wasn’t expecting a bonus packet of high blood pressure and nervous tics. And that was before I botched up the big Christmas order.“Janet, in here. No...pfNone door

    Bookshipped

A windchime sort of noise filled the room. I keep my eyes glued to the page before me and call out the route greeting. “Welcome to Book Blanks, let us find your book for you. Feel free to look around.”The vague sense of a customer’s presence approaching me was the only thing to break me from my focus. I sigh. It always happens when the book just starts to get good. I paste on a smile and my customer service voice and flip my hair over my shoulder to assess the customer. Broad shoulders, dark eyes, and lips turned down into a frown. He was in here a few days ago. I force myself to focus on his ...pfNone door
