Theresa parked her Hyundai in the first open spot she could find. She’d gotten the Elantra in magenta, remembering how she’d always admired the jocks and preps in high school for their red sporty cars; she peered at the newly washed sedan’s reflection in the windows of the deli. In anticipation of this meal, she had not eaten breakfast, and her belly was slightly rumbling as she unplugged her phone from the dash and put the contents of her purse in order. It was her first Friday off work in ages, and as her kids were in school and her husband Jack at work, she had a rare opportunity to do only...

Carrie’s heart juddered. One unopened email sat in her inbox, the message she’d been praying for since she sent in her materials. After being downsized from the antiquities department at the museum six months ago, she’d applied for any job remotely related to her field—which, admittedly, weren’t many—and even several entry-level positions requiring no experience at all. And I intend to write children's stories, but I don't think my stories are suitable for children. Or maybe they are. I don´t know. W...

The gravel crunched under his boots as Tucker Howard crossed the parking lot. At least he thought it was as there were no vehicles parked anywhere. Stopping to read the sign on the building which said, Halfway There Bar & Grill, he admired the attractive structure. The front of the building was made of stone with polished, wooden steps leading up to thwww.onedoor.cce doors. Large wood beams extended out from the front supporting a high peaked, slate tile roof. Rocking chairs were scattered along the covered front porch though no one was sitting in them. The bar sat on the shoreline of a large lake. He ...
