    Back when the world was young, the morning skies promised adventurers excitement in undiscovered lands. Hilda, a tall, stout woman, dressed in nothing more than a loose tunic and short trousers, was one of those adventurers, having traveled years, far from her home in the north.She hadn’t wanted to be an adventurer at first.     Arnold had big teeth, thin and long like needles, and large purple eyes. He lived in a pond by a willow tree and spat pond water at anything passing by. He happily inconvenienced everyone, pricking ankles with his sharp teeth, spitting, pranking, and terrifying small forest creatures until one day an echoing splash rattled the whole forest.     It was weird the way she looked at him. Do all the water spirits look at humans like that? He didn’t know. It was the first time he had seen a water spirit. She looked shy, lowering her eyes, flipping her small blond eyelashes. She was the size of his hand but he could see everything in her as if it was magnified.
