When Heron built his home, he did so as he’d always dreamed - as close to the edge of man’s world as he could reach. The Wastes were known for one thing - the further south one ventured, the quieter the cries of animals, and the duller the greens of fruitful trees. Down here, the dunes were unforgiving and caked with the dust of powdered bones. At the lowermost point of the Wastes, the sands gave way to an ashen swathe of soil and gravel. Here, Heron found stones just strong enough to form stable walls. The trees, bereft as they were of fruit or leaves, provided ample wood for him to construct...ptqone door

    'LILY'S DINER.'

He sat at the same table inside the diner like he did everyday, and ordered the same breakfast; two egg over easy, two pancakes with syrup, four strips of crisp bacon and a black coffee. His presence was always anticipated by a certain waitress, who had the name 'Jane,' plastered across her name tag. A meticulous review of the room assured him of his solitude. The bedroom door remained locked. Wards of Shadow and Light were visible from where he stood, the contrasting tendrils unbroken, indicating a lack of intrusion. Shadows veiled the windows, serving as extended security. He sent a brief sweep of p...ptqone door

    The Third Woe

“This window,” I stood there and marveled, “is an ugly, hateful bastard.”It began to grow big gruesome teeth, loose and decaying with outpourings of heinous odors. Then, this hideous masterpiece smiled at me. The dry lips split open, and two tongues emerged from its throat. One stretched desperately towards my gin martini, but I lunged backward, downing the drink right before it was too late.“I’m suffering an emergency,” I thought. “I must do something about this window.”I went to the kitchen and made a highball. I needed to screw my head on properly and fix this mess. As the soda splashed int...ptqone door
