My Brother and I
I don’t remember much about our parents. Their faces had long since blurred over the years we’ve been apart, since they abandoned us. My brother and I were six and four, respectively. I remember we went to the park. It was cloudy at the park. We had played there before while our parents were working, but that day we stayed until the street lights came on. I never knew what their jobs were. Maybe they were killed. They didn’t come back to the park to get us, like I think they usually did. My brother and I slept under the slide. It was cold. A police officer found us the next morning and asked ...
A Warm Winter
My eyes snap open to my dark cold room. I don't bother to look over at Tom because I know he won’t be there. He hasn’t been, at least for the last few weeks. I sigh, it is way too early to start the day, but now I’m up. I roll out from under my covers and wince when my toes touch the cold hardwood. I suggested to Tom that we install heated floors a few years ago, but he laughed the idea off. That is a sound I have not heard in a long time, Tom’s laughter. He shoved his messes into corners to make room for decorations, and snuck into the human's kitchen to steal uncooked rice and threaded them onto string to use as holiday lights. He set up a little Christmas tree, which was really just a leafy branc...
"A Day Without Miss Blues"
On the days that I got a random burst of energy, I had to grab on with a firm hold. My burst of energy came at approximately 1:06 P.M. The blues came, gave me the usual feel of heavy limbs that tied me to the bed and a gaping hole in my chest–like when I finished watching a 12/10 show–, then Miss Blues left. I showered without staying under the spray and staring at the pink tiled walls until the hot water ran out. I shaved my entire body, moisturized, and went through the motions of a wash and go that left me with an afro of defined curls. This in itself was another sign that it was a good da...
