Standing in the quaint antique shop, Ruby held an old photograph in her hand stunned by the face looking back at her. It was her face but not her face as she knew it. This face was older and had seen more of life. She clutched the photograph wondering what had propelled her to enter the antique shop. Yes, antiques were her passion. It wasn’t the acrid smell of the smoke drifting into my bed corner which woke me, nor was it the heat of the flames or the cries of the villagers fleeing for their lives. I first met Thaddeus Rathbone during my undergraduate program at UCLA. There for different majors - he for computer science and I for graphic design - we shared several gen eds and a deep love of all things tech. From the wheel to cell phones, many study sessions were spent gushing over the most interesting thing we saw in Wired or some gear one of us recently acquired. Fast friends, our favorite after school pasttime was scouting garage sales for rare or old machines and parts. The summer going into our senior year, he hosted me at his (parents’) house in Owens Valley. The main house was an a...azyone door
