Now that they were inside the shop, there was no turning back. The bookseller pulled down his reading glasses to the bridge of his nose and looked at them curiously. It had been earlier in the day that the Bookseller’s Association had sent out a notice stating that bookstores around town were noticing a spate of shoplifting. The shopkeeper shook his head in despair, honestly summer break spelt nothing but trouble, with school kids having nothing to do but indulge in mischief. Miss Brown stared at the computer, her mind far away, dreaming of the blue ocean, relaxing and sipping margaritas on the sunny beaches of the Mexican Gulf. The cursor on the old Mac blinked impatiently, emitting short beeps, hungry for the next word. She sighed deeply, her heart heavy with grief and disillusion. Unlike my sister, Stella, my magic didn’t show itself until I was almost a teenager. From the time that she was three and I was five, until Halloween of my twelfth year, I’d assumed I was like my older brother, my twenty-two older cousins, and my mother and her seven siblings: ordinary. Whatever magical DNA had made my ancestors witches and mages and healers had dwindled over the centuries until it was my great-great grandmother, Dorothea, her youngest granddaughter (my grandma), Lila, and her youngest granddaughter, Stella. We were still raised with some of the old ways, given our sewww.onedoor.cccret name...7iUone door
