I was on my way to a meeting when Laura called.“Hey, girlfriend, I’m in town and have an hour to kill. Want to meet me for coffee?”Running late and with a to-do list longer than the Santa Fe Trail, I decided what the heck. It wouldn’t hurt anything if I missed the meeting. “Sure. Why not?”“Great,” she said. “I’ll grab a booth.”I made a left at the next light and hit the bank’s drive-thru. At least I could get one thing off my to-do list. A Bird Flying into the House is a Sign of Impending Death

I woke that night to a rustling downstairs. It was late—too late for the kids to be up, unless Arthur had had another nightmare and retreated to his under-the-table den for safety. But the kids’ doors were closed, my three children immersed in their respective dream-worlds. And I cried. ‘Eyes shut tight’, my mom told me. ‘Sometimes the darkness is better than the light.”Sometimes the darkness is better than the light.I ran. Like a gazelle from a...mmjone door

    Finally, A Happy Ending

The violent wind beat against the old home, rattling every stained-glass window. Thunder roared overhead, the gods announcing their anger. Lightning flashed across the skies, illuminating the harsh sway of the century-old pines and oaks of the forests beyond. The ice-cold rain poured in steady torments as it had for a solid three days, threatening to flood the three-hundred-year-old home. A tall figure, cloaked in black, slowly made its way to the house, battling the downpour. Looking out, nobody would have seen this being. The hounds howled as the thunder grew louder. The door slammed open, s...mmjone door
