THE GARAGE
The phone was ringing. I hurriedly tried to unlock the door to get inside. “Mike is that you, this is Heather.” The voice was familiar to me. Heather used to be the office manager at the firm I formerly worked at. “I’m working over at The Supply House, and you sent your resume for the job opening we have here. My boss would like to meet you. Can you come over for an interview?” I could hardly contain the elation that surged through me. “As long as I can see your smiling face again, I’d be happy to.” “Great, I’ll see you at two-thirty, okay?” I pulled into the parking lot at the address Heather...
Das entfernte Problem
Dad passed down the problem like a reluctant inheritance. Along with my dark green eyes, frail build, and insomnia, I was left with what he named the ‘entfernte Problem’—which awkwardly translated from German meant the distant problem; because www.onedoor.cceven then, nineteen years ago, he knew he would never live to see it solved, that it was innately and irrevocably distant from his attainment. His father, my grandfather, had died during the Vietnam war, so my grandmother packed up her children—at the time my dad, age two; Aunt Lydia, age four; and Uncle Walter, age five—and moved home to her sister in N...

I covered my face as I left the house. The wind today was so hot and strong, strong enough to make the old mills go round. It’s a shame those things don’t work anymore, they could be useful nowadays. I remember the stories of my grandma, how the mills helped them to produce electricity, preventing any kind of electric shortage. Now they’re just useless pieces of crap that no one wants, they don’t even make a good scene, besides, it’s pretty hard to see them from the distance considering the gray fog. The weather is so hot, it has been like this for a few days now. I just hope it doesn’t remain...
Helen's Memories
The audible warning alarm put Oak Field Psychiatric Hospital staff on high alert. Staffers knew the siren meant a staffer is in a life-threatening situation. The hospital immediately went into lock-in- place status. “Paging Doctor Simms to the Recreation Area—stat!” Blares through the P.A. system.Doctor Simms sprints through a labyrinth of halls to the recreation area. Winded, he burst into the rec area to find the security guards herding patients on the left side of the room. While Helen Davis, eyes rapidly blinking, leans against the far wall restraining Social worker Claudia Brown, in a re...
