Desire and Deceit“Once again, my pet.” Philip’s beckoning hand tugged me forward. I rose from the bench before our simple wooden cottage and joined him—willing my eyes away from the space where the concentric rings of limestone blocks met open air. How often had I huddled for comfort against the earthen wall next to my straw pallet after waking from dreams of falling? I chose to focus on Philip in his sinewy glory. He smiled and brushed the back of his hand against my cheek. “Are you ready?”Though my belly quivered at the prospect of another passage through the bewildering chaos of the Betwixt...bjSone door

    A Fish Story

In my experience, talking fish can be real assholes. My daughter, Maggie, and I had been in St. Thomas for three days. I’d finally had enough sitting around the hotel pool, sipping ridiculously-colored drinks with tiny paper umbrellas. I figured there must be a decent fishing hole around here someplace. My daughter barely looked up from the paperback she was reading poolside in one of the chaise lounge chairs. “Really, Dad? A Garden to Die For: A Eulogy for Spring"It's absolutely breathtaking, Meg!" gushed one of the Mornay twins.  Meg couldn't tell them apart, so she merely smiled, bowing her head demurely. Meg Randall was hosting the 'The Mississippi Bountiful Gardens Society' at her country estate.  This was their first gathering since reforming, a process that occurred on a yearly basis as members always seemed to drop off after the first meeting. The current group had high hopes of avoiding that outcome.Meg noticed a few of the young matrons wrinkling their noses earlier, as they passed through the musty hal...bjSone door
