    The mist rolled through the forest as Jacob and Amy made their way towards the main road to wait for the school bus. These early winter mornings were getting to Jacob. Amy had been accepted onto the swim team at their high school and she needed to be there before 5 am. Their mom had asked him to go with her to school in the winter mornings when it was still dark.     Perry got up from the wrong side of the bed. On a Saturday, no less.He muttered, “No wonder people get grouchy.” How did it happen? He distinctly remembered being on his side of the bed when he turned out the light.He made his way to the far side, his side, to get his slippers. Perry slid his feet into them without awakening Jane, his wife.     “So you’re back,” the old Japanese man said, his face wrinkling as his cheeks turned up into a slight smile. His eyes drifted to a corner of the quaint traditional house and landed on a small, shimmery figure that was slowly materializing. The man sighed and, turning his back on the figure for just a moment, picked up a wooden tray containing tea things and some small Japanese crackers. He slowly walked forward, shaking a bit as he went, to a short table that was situated in the center of the small room.     Breaking Bone

    They’d made it into Barandilla not long after sunset.  You couldn’t call Barandilla a town. It didn’t even appear on a lot of maps. On a lonely stretch of the highway running through the Central Australian desert, it had a pub, two petrol pumps – one of which had an ‘Out Of Order’ sign that had hung on it so long it had almost faded to illegibility – and a stray dog. ‘Bob’s Hotel’ served as a rest stop forwww.onedoor.cc passing trucks and the occasional drover, and a social hub for folks from the surrounding cattle stations.  It had been a long day. Well, that was probably an understatement. The four of the...yy1one door
